Smart City Introduction

Smart cities should be regarded as systems of people interacting with and using flows of energy, materials, services and financing to catalyst sustainable economic development, resilience, and high quality of life; these flows and interactions become smart through making strategic use of information and communication infrastructure and services in a process of transparent urban planning and management that is responsive to the social and economic needs of society.”
(European Commission, 2013)
Smart city is often being related into the development of Information Technologies in a big scale. A smart city itself is different from a digital city as smart city is complex. Smart city is a city that could successfully implemented appropriate new technologies to use to deliver a smarter city. It links every aspect of life such as economic, politic, information and technology, and social to develop a better infrastructures and services.

According to the European Smart Cities (2011), there are six characters that define a smart city, such as Smart People, Smart Economy, Smart Governance, Smart Mobility, Smart Environment, and Smart Living. These are the most important aspect to build a smart city completely. Smart city concept should include many elements as it captures mostly all aspect that relates to a city itself. The main objective of a smart city is actually to increase the quality of life of the citizens which also include all aspects of the citizens’ rights.
The picture below shows clearly a good plan of a connected smart city.

There are three measurements for the smart city implementation, such as Buildings, Energy Networks, and Transportation. Buildings will be made with the lowest possible energy consumption levels, which will includes a good insulation material with the buildings. The transportation should be smarter too by using the low carbon transportation and smart applications for transportation system.

    1. Hi Chi Le Truong,
Smart cities are currently developing smoothly in some of large cities around the world, such as Barcelona, Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Berlin, Tokyo, London, New York, Paris, Toronto, Vienna.
Our technology is sufficient enough to fully implemented a smart city, yet I would like to say that to implement it, it would take us approximately 5-10 years.
      Cheers.

    2. but don't you think 5-10 years is too short for a progressing country such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, etc to develop and implement Smart City in their country?

    3. I agree with Ican Dayo, the smart city concept seems fit for the "rich" cities, but what about countries or cities still in developement?

    4. i don't agree that smart city concept only fit for the "rich" big cities.
IMO a smaller city is actually will be easier to be developped as a smart city.
but i do think to develop smart city, a big fund is needed by the country.

    5. Hi Ican Dayo,
As explained above, to implement a smart city concept, a city has to be smarter in all aspects of citizens' life qualities. In order to develop a smart city, it is important to know how to implement those six characteristics explained in this blog. It does not matter to be able to implement every aspects fully to be called as a smart city. What most important is to increase the citizens' life qualities.
Those developing countries that mentioned, I would believe that they will be able to progress in this 5-10 years.
      Cheers.

    7. Hi Akhbar Bimantara,
I could not agree with you more.
Taking Singapore as an example, smaller cities will be easier to handle. It will be easier to implement the smart city concept in a smaller cities than the bigger one. The reason why developed countries could implement the smart city concept is because they had already developed and have a lot of money to spend compared to the developing countries.
      Cheers.

    1. Hi Bijkudman,
The smart city project will be implemented everywhere as long as the country is ready for it, because they need to implement everything from the basic, such as transportation, smart access, smart card, etc. I believe that Indonesia will be ready for it in approximately 5-10 years.
      Cheers.

  6. Well, nice WebPage and information about Smart City..
But from what i read in this blog, i do not see any Smart city Idea for a Development country.
Would you mind to give me one or maybe two example of Smart City Concept in a development country?

    1. Hi Ican Dayo,
Smart city concept is actually making its progress in a developing country, such as India. I have my reasons to put developing countries aside as they are still developing their country. India would make Varanesi and Delhi to be a smart city models before they continue to implement it into another cities.
In this case, developed countries are the best example as they have already implemented the smart city concept with the six characteristics as explained in this blog.
      Such a good question.
      Cheers.
